SAINT JOY·Layered Lotus Motif Song Brocade
Layered Lotus Motif: Stacked Lotus Blossoms, Serene Elegance
Brand Legacy: SAINT JOY
Founded in Suzhou, the historic cradle of Chinese silk, SAINT JOY stands as the pioneer of modern industrialized Song Brocade. The brand’s lineage stretches back to the Shangjiukan Silk & Satin Workshop, established in Suzhou in 1889 during the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty. Grounded in the heritage and innovation of Song Brocade — a National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China, inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as part of Chinese sericulture and weaving craftsmanship — SAINT JOY developed a tradition-aligned electronic jacquard loom in 2012, unlocking industrial-scale production of this ancient craft.

- With Qian Xiaoping, the sole national-level representative inheritor of Song Brocade weaving, as its technical advisor, the brand achieved a breakthrough in digital production of the craft while safeguarding every core standard of the intangible tradition.
- SAINT JOY rose to global prominence at the 2014 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, where it supplied the core fabric for the “New Chinese-style” garments worn by all attending heads of state. In the decade since, the brand has served as an official supplier of diplomatic gifts for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, establishing itself as a global cultural ambassador for Song Brocade.

The Pattern
The Layered Lotus pattern draws inspiration from lotus motifs on Southern Song silk relics. Its primary reference is the lotus-patterned gauze robe unearthed from the tomb of Zhao Boyun. It features a classic symmetrical double-lotus composition typical of the Song Dynasty, recreating the restrained, orderly and refined aesthetic cherished by Song artisans. The design adopts a repeating symmetrical paired-lotus layout, with blooms facing one another from left and right. Free of over-elaborate interlocking branches, ample negative space is reserved between flowers — a hallmark of Song aesthetics.

The layered lotus carries layered auspicious meanings:
- Purity & integrity: The lotus rises clean from mud, representing integrity, self-discipline and noble character。
- Lotus seeds (lian zi) share the sound of “continuity”, carrying wishes for lasting peace and blessings.
- Harmony & union: Paired symmetric double lotus stands for harmony, companionship and harmonious relationships, popular for wedding and ceremonial wear.
This Layered Lotus Motif rose to fame in the 2026 CCTV Spring Festival Gala performance Ode to the Flower Gods. Actress Li Qin, cast as the Osmanthus Flower Goddess and the renowned Song poet Li Qingzhao, wore a camisole crafted from this very SAINT JOY Song Brocade.

Craft & Authenticity
Layered Lotus Motif belongs to SAINT JOY’s signature Lustre Shot Brocade Satin collection. It features multi-weft figured weaving, with fine gold threads outlining the lotus petals. Gold threads are used sparingly, avoiding an overpowering glitter; instead, they cast a soft diffused shimmer that emerges gently as light shifts. Woven on a base of 6A-grade mulberry silk with wrapped gold threads, every authentic piece bears SAINT JOY’s exclusive woven steel stamp along the selvage.

Song-dynasty scholars loved the lotus not for flashy grandeur, but for its quiet, self-possessed grace. SAINT JOY’s Layered Lotus Motif weaves that refined serenity into every thread.
