Golden Tulip Glow: Tulips in Bloom, Gilded Butterflies Seeking Fragrance
Designer Profile
Zhang Guoquan
Master of Silk Craft in Jiangsu Province and the inheritor of Wujiang District’s Intangible Heritage — the Craft of Silk Floss Thread Making. He is the founder of Tongxin Silk · Tongxin Jinluo (Tongxinsilk). Based in Shengze, the renowned silk town, he has dedicated over forty years to silk weaving.

Unlike other Song Brocade masters who focus on recreating unearthed ancient patterns, Zhang Guoquan specialises in original modern floral Song Brocade. His style is poetic and soft, imbued with a classical garden aesthetic that resonates deeply with contemporary women’s quiet luxury taste. Golden Tulip Glow is his signature work.
- He is one of the few artisans in Wujiang who has fully mastered the full set of hand-dyeing techniques for silk floss threads. He independently dyes the coloured weft threads for Song Brocade and gauze damask, which is the key to his signature misty gradients and softly blended four-weft gold-woven Song Brocade. Gradient colour shifts through floating sheds are his distinctive artistic hallmark.
- His wo
rks have travelled overseas for cultural exchange. He once donated a handwoven Song Brocade gift box to the Lan Su Chinese Garden in Portland, USA, serving as a cultural ambassador for Suzhou. Mr. Zhang Guoquan remarked: “Silk is Suzhou’s calling card to the world. I hope this brocade box can become a miniature cultural bridge, allowing more international friends to feel the warmth of Chinese civilisation.”

Design Inspiration
Golden Tulip Glow is a modern garden poem woven into Song Brocade. It depicts a gentle, vibrant spring garden wrapped in morning mist. Tulips dance alongside delicate butterflies. Within Chinese decorative tradition, butterflies symbolise joy, freedom and sweet companionship. The sapphire-blue base evokes a spring sky still veiled in dawn haze. Iridescent gold threads ripple across warp and weft like shimmering morning light. Tulips stand gracefully with a glaze reminiscent of Song porcelain. Iridescent gold threads weave dewdrops ready to fall at the flower centres, while butterflies drift toward the blooms along varied flight paths.

Symbolism
- Abundant beauty and prosperity: “Yu” = tulip, symbolising flourishing vitality and a rich, fulfilling life.
- Joy and auspicious transformation: Butterfly stands for happiness, romance and new beginnings
- Fragrance lingering, good fortune flowing: The name “Yu Man Jin Xiang” literally means “golden fragrance filling the air”, a blessing for lasting gentle luck and sweet encounters.
Golden Tulip Glow belongs to Zhang Guoquan’s iconic four-weft coloured gold Song Brocade collection and is one of his most popular floral pieces. It adopts four-weft figuring with fine champagne gold and amethyst gold threads. Gold threads only trace the outlines of tulip petals and butterfly wing veins instead of filling the whole motif, creating a soft misty sparkle without heavy, glaring shine. Woven from 100% 6A-grade mulberry silk paired with wrapped gold threads, every authentic piece bears Zhang Guoquan’s exclusive woven steel stamp on the selvage.

Many Song Brocade patterns carry the solemn weight of ancient rituals and relics. Golden Tulip Glow is different. It captures the lightness of spring dew, the soft unfurling of flower petals, and the quiet romance of butterflies chasing scent.
